Bedford is a lively town with its markets, shops, culture, arts and history. Running through the town, the River Ouse is lined with lovely gardens, places to sit the surroundings and memorials. On the embankment itself, you have the Bedford Rowing Club Boathouse, where the Bedford Regatta takes place every year. Kayaking, canoeing and slalom races also take place. Professional rugby (Bedford Blues) and football (Bedford Town F.C.) are also strongly featured. An 18th century hotel called the Swan overlooks the embankment. Close to the town centre, there are remnants of Bedfords medieval castle, which can be viewed. The Corn Exchange in the centre of Bedford hosted many famous people and artists, inlcuding Glenn Miller. Although not from Bedford, Glenn Miller based himself here during the war, and sent out live broadcasts to the nation. A bronze statue bust can be seen outside the Corn Exchange of Glenn Miller. John Bunyan, the author, was imprisoned for many years in Bedford Gao. Whilst serving time there, he wrote the famous book "The Pilgrims Progress".
